SHAKA TEA - RETAIL EXPERIENCE MANAGER

Shaka Tea Seeking Retail Leader with a Passion for Hawaiʻi

Shaka Tea, the first line of Hawaiʻi-grown, ready-to-drink māmaki iced teas is establishing a mixed-use tea bar and retail experience center in the heart of downtown Hilo, HI.

We want our Shaka Tea Shop to be a place for locals and visitors to converge - where through our teas and overall retail experience, we can share the story of our islands. Our shop is modeled after a hybrid community - retail - tea space.


We're looking for an energetic, experienced, creative retail manager who is excited to be part of a growing brand and is up to the task to launch our new tea shop / retail experience center! A 'no problems, only solutions' attitude is critical, as is being excellent at managing your time, delivering and executing on projects and largely being able to operate with little supervision.

Your role will include, but not be limited to:

  • Open and close shop, includes merchandising and setting up iced tea each morning

  • Manage inventory

  • Support owner with buying and sourcing complementing wares to the tea bar concept (local pottery, distinctive Hawaiʻi-made artisan wares and art, books related to tea, Hawaiian history, culture and plants)

  • Manage accounts with vendors and basic bookkeeping for the store

  • Serve as our lead ambassador for all store visitors

  • Design and execute with the owner monthly community programs and workshops in the space (tea blending, māmaki kapa making, lei making classes)

  • Run our local, monthly ceramic artist spotlight submission program (each month Shaka Tea will feature a different local ceramic artist making tea wares in the shop)

  • Attend select events on behalf of Shaka Tea within the community

  • Brew and serve hot teas for the tea bar and manage cash register

  • Eventually as business grows, train and oversee a sales associate

  • Oversee basic admin related to the shop.

  • Produce weekly, monthly and quarterly sales reports. 

In addition to a salary commensurate with experience, we pay a generous commission and offer paid healthcare, 2 weeks paid vacation and 1 paid day per quarter to volunteer with a nonprofit of your choice. 

Hours are 8 AM - 4 PM Tuesday - Saturday. Position is located in Hilo, HI.

 3-7 years in retail experience is strongly preferred, as is a deep knowledge of and/or passion for Hawaiian studies, botany, marketing.

About The Role

Shaka Tea is seeking an ambitious, experienced and hungry Director of Sales - Western US to help grow our fast-growing retail sales business across all channels (traditional retail, speciality/organic, food service, corporate campuses) on the West Coast Coast. The ideal hire is based already in the West Coast in SoCal, the Bay Area, Portland or Seattle.

Our Director of Sales - Western US is a leader in the field with deep experience in CPG (building brands into strong, industry players is preferred!) to help grow our retail sales business across all channels

The ability to be flexible, whilst still hitting sales goals is essential. The right person for this role will enjoy a “fast-paced” environment where priorities evolve as the business develops and grows.

The role will be tasked with working to ambitiously grow our retail presence and a ‘no problems only solutions’ attitude is critical to our company culture. This role will be responsible for achieving the annual sales revenue and profit goals for Shaka Tea, collaboratively set with management. The Director of Sales will also be responsible for on-going sales and selling expense forecasting, as well as establishing selling prices within given profit parameters.

The Director of Sales will work closely with our distributors in retail and food service, the founders, our brokers and merchandising support teams towards our mutual goal of sharing our Hawaiian iced teas with the world - first focused stop, the Western US!

Core Responsibilities:

  • Strong leadership, management and the driving force of the West Coast business, overseeing all distributors, brokers and merchandising support

  • Analyze, plan, manage and grow the business in the West Coast of the US territory.

  • Secure consistent sales-driven growth.

  • Prospect and open new independent accounts including chain accounts with a high retention rate.

  • As the company grows and hits sales goals, recruit, hire, train, evaluate, and manage a growing sales team as well as territory sales managers

  • Manage all reporting requirements of our brokers, distributors, merchandisers

  • Communicate biweekly with founders remotely

  • Work with founders to set sales goals for distributors and evaluate their performance against these goals monthly, quarterly and annually

  • Quarterly budget review with management team

  • Oversee and manage expenses of our sales support team (brokers, merchandisers)

  • Coordinate sales training for merchandising team and key distributors

  • Review distributor account placement and sales updates and compare performance to goals with team

  • Foster and manage relationships with new and existing customers by; participating in trade and distributor shows, customer planning meetings, leveraging customer specific programs where appropriate, work in-market with broker account managers to increase their knowledge of Shaka Tea products and to jointly work opportunities at points of availability and distribution.

  • Inventory management / depletion management

  • Development and tracking of chain activity

  • Development of regional and eventually national incentive programs

  • Work with management to develop Point-of-Sale and product promotion material

  • Review depletion reports regularly and make proactive plans accordingly

  • Responsible for hiring of regional sales managers/involvement in hiring certain administrative staff as company grows

  • Able to tender and hire outsourced contractors as needed

  • Conduct annual team and contractor performance reviews

  • Schedule and participate in market blitzes and promotions where possible

  • Manage all trade spending within the approved Account Plan. Work with Marketing and Finance teams to analyze any incremental opportunities and obtain final approval before committing to any spending outside of the Account Plan.

  • Conscientiously manage travel expenses and work within budget parameters

  • Attend national trade events, possibility for select international trade events

  • 1 day per quarter of paid, company community service with a nonprofit of your choice

  • Attend annual company retreat in the Hawaiian Islands, all expenses covered by Shaka Tea

What you need?

  • 4-7 years of experience in a sales management position within the (CPG) industry, beverage preferred as is experience with a growing brand.

  • Demonstrate expertise in a variety of the field's concepts, practices and procedures.

  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal

  • Ability to communicate with management team remotely

  • Business acumen, understands a P&L, able to prioritize programs based upon key financial criteria

  • Channel savvy. Understands food, mass, club, as well as the other channels in sufficient manner to create programs for customers without creating channel conflict.

  • Taking ownership and responsibility for actions, behaviors and contributions is an important part of our team culture.

  • High energy and ‘no problems only solutions’ attitude

  • At least 4 years Broker and Distributor management experience.

  • Proven and solid understanding of Category Management and fact-based selling

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple things simultaneously and set priorities effectively.

  • Happy to travel (up to 55-65% of the time) when required and ability to work flexible hours when needed.

  • Clean driving record

  • An MBA is preferred, but we take real-world experience with a track record of success over a degree

  • Mastery of retailer math is essential

  • Must possess a strong understanding of distributor-based business models and networks, deep industry ties in the region are preferred.
